Health Technician (Hearing)

Responsible for preliminary history with veterans being seen for audiometric assessment. These interviews may include completing histories and surveys with veterans. Responsible for inspecting the ear canal and for routine ear lavage to clean the external auditory canal of cerumen and debris that will interfere with audiometric testing and/or ear mold impressions. When requested by the audiologist, the incumbent is responsible for taking accurate ear impressions, preparing the impression for shipping and mailing the ear impression together with the hearing aid order to the vendor. Responsible for administration of certain aspects and entry of data such as hearing aid registrations, removal of turned in hearing aids, ordering clinic stock and editing demographic information in the Remote Order Entry System (ROES), which operates on line with the VA Denver Acquisition and Logistics Center (VA DALC). Responsible for checking the hearing aids to insure that all ordered components are present and that the hearing aids are operational and ready to be issued. Tracking hearing aid orders to ensure timeliness of receipt of hearing aids. Communicates with Audiology staff when there are order inaccuracies due to manufacturer or ordering clinician and initiates adjustment as needed based upon information in the patient record or consultation with staff. Completes routine hearing aid fittings using computerized equipment. Responsible for routine repairs of hearing aids delivered or mailed to the Audiology Clinic. When it is necessary for a hearing aid to be returned for repair, the incumbent prepares all necessary paperwork and electronic documentation and records and prepares it for shipping. Maintains clinic records in accordance with service, medical center and VA requirements. Maintains an adequate supply of materials and stock hearing and speech devices to meet patient needs and not cause a delay in patient care. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
experience performing (or assisting with) safe and complete cerumen removal; experience managing the supplies of an audiology/hearing clinic (such as hearing aids, batteries, assistive listening devices, etc.); and experience performing patient appointment scheduling and data entry. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed one-half year of graduate-level education/internship that is directly related to the work of this position. NOTE TO APPLICANTS:
One year of full time graduate-level education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study; 9 semester hours will be considered as one-half academic year of graduate study OR, Combination:

Physical Requirements:
The duties of the position regularly require periods of sitting, standing, and walking. Working with patients in the clinic requires regular sitting, bending, and standing. Patient transport requires pushing of wheelchairs. Lifting is required of the position, but only to a light-to-moderate degree. Occasional lifting of heavier loads, as in assisting the moving of a patient from a wheelchair to a chair, is required. Work in front of a computer for a period of 1-4 hours per day is required. The work requires regular and recurring ability to physically control or defend against emotionally ill patients. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster.
